Faculty Spotlight: Qudar Ahmed

Qadar Ahmed.JPGThis month we are shining our spotlight on Computer Applications Specialist Program Director Qadar Ahmed. Not only is Ahmed a Program Director but also Tucson College’s unofficial in-house IT specialist! This month is an especially big one for Ahmed because he will be celebrating his 12-year anniversary with Tucson College.

Ahmed was born and raised in Mogasdishu, Somalia and immigrated to the United States in 1981. He began the ESL (English as a Second Language) program at Pima Community College and eventually graduated with a degree in Digital Electronics. Ahmed then went on to the University of Phoenix where he gained a degree in Information System Technology.

Ahmed attributes his discovered passion for teaching to his wife.

In 2000, he took his first teaching job at Apollo College. After Apollo College was bought out by Carrington, Ahmed moved to Tucson College (circa 2004) and has become an indispensable member of the faculty.

As an instructor, Ahmed teaches the Computer Applications class in the morning and Medisoft to the Medical Billers and Coders and Medical Assisting students at night.

“I am lucky to work with different types of students. I am very happy and proud when I see them graduate. Together we change their futures and their lives,” noted Ahmed.

What makes Ahmed so special though is his constant willingness to help the campus community. He is the go-to guy on campus for any computer, phone, or technical problems and he is always willing to help. He has never said no when asked for help. From stopping what he is doing to help download software on a computer to coming in over winter break to re-image (clean-off) computers and then re-download everything on them so they are ready when the students get back, he is the consummate team player.

Ahmed believes, “There is no such thing as not my job. When it comes to students it becomes everybody’s job.”

Gina Williams, the CNA/PCTProgram Director, calls Ahmed her personal HelpDesk because whenever she is having troubles with her computer and can’t figure something out, all she has to do is call Ahmed and he will help.

Tucson College certainly wouldn’t be as special as it is without the positivity of Qadar Ahmed.
